This Church was built between 1475-1479 by the Italian architect, Aristotle Fioravanti, at the centre of the Kremlin (Slavonic for citadel) complex in Moscow, the new capital of what was to later become the Russian Empire. All the Tsars and Tsarinas of Russia were crowned in this Cathedral and here were celebrated the marriages of the Imperial Family.

Blessed Luke (Hosios Loukas in Greek) of Steiris died in 953. The Monastery bearing his name was built in the region west of Athens and north of Delphi, probably by the Igoumenos (Abbot), Philotheos, with some help from Byzantine Emperor Romanos II (963-969), shortly after the saint’s death. Its mosaics are among the most beautiful to have survived from the Byzantine world.

Painting comes matted with an archival matte and black metal frame.

Kastoria, in far-northern Greece, is famous for its many Byzantine Churches. The one depicted here is unusual in having a tall dome, giving the building its second name, Koubelidiki from kubeh, or dome, in Turkish. The Greek name, kastriotissa, has to do with the Church’s proximity to the walls of the citadel, or kastro.

Painting comes matted with an archival matte and black metal frame.
